  • Level 1 – 10 credit module
  • Semester 2
  • 24 places
  • English - School of Humanities
  • Coursework 100%
  • Wednesday evening

This module will introduce students to several basic plot/story structures and present a method for producing a novel outline. This outline will serve as a guide toward the completion of a first draft of a novel, and/or as the expected component of a completed fiction proposal.

During weekly workshops that begin with a brief lecture on methodology, students will work independently, as a group, and with convenor guidance, toward the completion of a scene by scene novel outline. Course content will include connecting the workshop teachings with the practical process of writing a novel length work of creative writing.

As a result of studying this module students will understand and have the ability to apply various literary and popular fiction plot architectures, understand the impact of a well-articulated story structure, and have developed the ability to expand this understanding into the creation of a full scene-by-scene fiction novel outline, including sketches for character and setting, for use during first draft writing and fiction book proposals.
