The aim of this module is to introduce main technical aspects of neonatal equipment and its applications in Neonatal Intensive Care (NICU) through case studies. It is intended to allow students to gain experience in understanding main NICU procedures and the specialised medical equipment and environment to care for premature babies in the NICU, how the medical data communicated and managed.



We will cover the following content:

  • introduction to neonatology and common medical equipment in NICU including incubator, ventilator, pulse oximeter, blood pressure monitor, cardiopulmonary monitor, phototherapy unit, infusion pumps, feeding pumps
  • handling and communicating medical data with central monitoring devices
  • NICU environment, common tests and treatments
  • clinical applications: exploring a range of medical applications
