The module examines the origins of nationalities question and territorial politics, as well as approaches to accommodation and conflict resolution. Apart from the cases of violent conflict the module will touch upon various forms of politics of territorial pluralism, identities and cleavages. The attention will be on sub-state and interstate dimensions of the issue. The module engages with academic fields of conflict studies, territorial politics, nationalism and constitutional law.

  • To understand the genesis and management of ethnic and nationalities conflicts, their causes and dynamics.
  • To examine and critically engage with the main approaches to conflict management and accommodation.
  • To explore the range of responses available including territorial, non-territorial autonomy, consociationalism, decentralisation, integration, citizenship.
  • To understand theoretical and practical implications of diverse approaches to conflict management.
  • To understand the limits of each of the approaches as well as normative and legal issues that arise from them.
