The virtual learning environment, MyDundee, will be used to support learning and generate discussion through use of discussion boards. Self-directed learning will be supported through use of a weekly learning guide developed by the module team to facilitate interaction and reflection with their mentor on the application of theory to practice.

Module Aims

To equip health practitioners with mental health knowledge and skills to operate at an advanced level in mental health settings.

Module Overview

This is a contemporary module delivered by University of Dundee and Abertay University, which will develop advanced clinical mental health assessment skills to enable you to manage care at an advanced level in mental health settings.

You will discover and analyse different frameworks for assessment and analyse and contrast different concepts of mental health and explanatory models. You will be able to critically apply mental health assessment skills to provide evidenced based care, make informed choices with appropriate differential diagnosis and deal with complex ethical, legal and professional issues.

The module is designed specifically to develop essential pathophysiology knowledge and the management of mental health deterioration. There will be a strong emphasis on interaction throughout the module, and self-directed learning will be supported to facilitate reflection on the application of theory to practice and person centred working.

You will have a practice assessor who will supervise, support and assess competencies alongside their overall development in practice.

The module is:

  • delivered by award winning and experienced academic and practice based staff from two Universities
  • clinically focussed to develop clinical knowledge and expertise in autonomous decision making

    1. Achievement of NHS Scotland ANP competencies confirmed by the practice assessor
    2. Completion of 4 patient logs
