Target audience

Health and social care practitioners interested in expanding their understanding and application of leadership capabilities and change management within contemporary care settings.

Mode of delivery

This module is delivered both as a face to face module and as a fully online module.

All online activity is through My Dundee (the University virtual learning environment). All materials are provided through this medium. Online learning offers you easy access to web resources and documents needed for you studies, as well as facilitating discussions and the exchange of ideas with fellow students and tutors. Anyone with access to the internet and basic IT skills will be able to use My Dundee.

Module aim(s)

This module aims to develop your leadership skills within your practice context, including developing understanding of organisational culture and a range of leadership models and theories. It also explores change management, as a key component of leadership in health and social care.

Module overview

On completing this module you will be able to:

  • analyse critically the concept of leadership and a range of leadership theories
  • explore and analyse in depth the personal and organisational factors that influence leadership practices of self and others
  • critically evaluate theories of organisational culture and power, considering these in health and social care
  • critically appraise a range of change management theories
  • apply a range of theory and research evidence relating to leadership and change management to address practice issues

Assessment strategy

The module assessment takes the form of a 4,000 word essay.

You will prepare a proposal for leading a change within a healthcare setting that is familiar to you. In the proposal,you must identify, justify and explore the change. You will also explore and analyse the range of organisational and leadership factors which would need to be taken into account when planning the change. The assessment is written in four parts, which are then submitted as one piece of work.

Module requirements

Educated to relevant first degree level or equivalent. You will need access to a computer with internet access.
