This module gives you an understanding of the risks associated with Islamic financial products and institutions.
It will help you develop critical reasoning for managing different risks at the institutional and regulatory levels of the Islamic value system.
You will examine the role of various stakeholders and evaluate Shari’ah compliant risk management instruments.
What you will learn
In this module you will:
- learn about risks in Islamic banks and products, including liquidity, credit, market, operational, and legal Shari'ah compliance risks
- discuss risk governance and management framework and the role of different stakeholders
- learn about systemic risks and banking stability from the regulatory perspective
By the end of this module, you will be able to:
- understand the risks associated with Islamic financial products and institutions
- critically analyse issues arising in managing different risks at the institutional and regulatory levels concerning compliance with the Islamic value system
- examine the role of different stakeholders in managing different risks at the institutional and regulatory levels
- evaluate Shari’ah compliant risk management instruments and systems to mitigate risks in Islamic finance

This module does not have a final exam.
Teaching methods / timetable
This module is delivered through a combination of lectures and guided independent study.
There will be 20 hours of lectures in this module. This will take up 10% of the time you are expected to put into this module.
Guided independent study including the completion of assessment tasks will take up the remaining 90%. 180 hours of effort is expected for this component.
