This module is designed to introduce you to the main risks faced by investors and multinational corporations. In particular, you will examine foreign exchange rate risk and learn about the financial products and strategies that can be used to manage this risk. You will also examine the economic and political environment in which investors and companies operate, as well as techniques that can be used to manage these risks.

What you will learn

In this module you will:

  • gain knowledge of foreign exchange markets, models of foreign exchange rate determination and financial products that manage currency risk
  • understand the practical uses of international capital markets for risk management purposes
  • about the international economic and political environment in which multinational companies operate
  • be aware of of the risks of foreign direct and foreign portfolio investment
  • gain practitioner perspectives of risk and techniques for assessing the risks of financial investments.

By the end of the module you will:

  • gather information from a number of sources in order to gain an understanding of the theory and practice of international financial markets and risk management
  • critically evaluate research in international financial markets and risk management
  • apply theory to real-world financial problems faced by multinational companies while understanding the difficulties involved in applying academic theories to real-world international financial and investment problems
  • gain valuable experience in communicating orally and in writing to identify, understand and develop arguments

Assignments / assessment

The coursework comprises the following:

  • coursework (20%)
  • final exam (80%)

Teaching methods / timetable

You will learn by taking a hands-on approach, lectures and tutorials will both be in person.

A typical week consists of one 2 hour lecture and two 1 hour tutorials.

During certain weeks additional sessions may be arranged to provide additional examples or invite guest lecturers.
