Professor Sally Ibbotson qualified in Medicine at the University of Leeds in 1986 and, after general medical training, undertook dermatology training in Newcastle upon Tyne where she developed an interest in photodermatology. She was appointed as Clinical Senior Lecturer in Photobiology in the Photobiology Unit, University of Dundee, Ninewells Hospital & Medical School in November 1998. Dr Ibbotson has clinical and research interests in photosensitivity diseases, photodiagnosis, phototherapy and photodynamic therapy.
She is responsible for the photodynamic therapy service in dermatology in Dundee and is involved in the Scottish Photodynamic Therapy Centre.
She has an important role in the National Service for investigation and management of patients with photosensitivity disorders. Dr Ibbotson also has leading roles in undergraduate and postgraduate dermatology training and education.
She has published over 130 papers and has a National and International reputation in photodermatology. She has been involved in the development of published guidelines in photodynamic therapy, photodiagnostics and phototherapy, has ongoing involvement in dermatology research and teaching committees and is a Royal College question writer for the dermatology specialist exam.
She is a regular reviewer for the main dermatology journals and is Associate Editor for Photodiagnosis and Photodynamic Therapy.
Key areas of research include:
- skin cancer and photodynamic therapy.
- phototherapy (notably optimisation of regimes and introduction of new therapies).
- clinical and genetic determinants of sensitivity and responses to phototherapies for skin diseases.
- interactions between UV and the skin and photosensitivity disorders.
Lectures and conferences
Sally Ibbotson is regularly invited to speak on the subjects of Photodermatology, Phototherapy, Photodynamic Therapy and Photosensitivity diseases at National and International meetings, including The British Association of Dermatologists, European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology, European Society for Photobiology, European Society for Photodynamic Therapy (EURO-PDT) and at National courses such as the St Johns Photodermatology Course and the British Association of Dermatologists Annual Consultants Course.
Key areas of undergraduate teaching include: Co-chair of Undergraduate Teaching Committee in Dermatology; development of innovative e?learning methods in dermatology in conjunction with the Medical School; Undergraduate mentor, tutor and examiner.
Key areas of postgraduate teaching include: Training Programme Director in Dermatology; responsible for the teaching and training of postgraduates in our department; Royal College question setter for the Specialist Certificate Examination in Dermatology; member of the Scottish Clinical Research Excellence Development Scheme Committee for approval and appointment of Clinical Lecturer posts at the University of Dundee.
