Professor Nikolai Zhelev is principal Investigator in JWCC and honorary Professor in a number of universities in the UK, China, Bulgaria and Russia. He has been involved as founding member, director and/or shareholder of five local and international biotech and biopharmaceutical companies. Currently he is serving as the President of the International BioDiscovery Federation. In his talk Professor Zhelev will discuss current opportunities and challenges for research collaborations between academia and the pharmaceutical industry in drug discovery and development, showing examples of his work in target validation, biomarker discovery, biosensors, stem cell technologies and organisation of clinical trials. An attention will be given to issues related to innovation, design and development of biopharmaceutical products.
