Based on a modular structure, our flagship medical education programme has three award levels: Certificate, Diploma and Masters. The Postgraduate Certificate is accredited by the Academy of Medical Educators (AoME).
Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education
The focus at certificate level is on the Teacher as Practitioner and is designed for health professionals new to teaching and for existing staff wishing to improve their educational expertise.
The Certificate is composed of three 20-credit modules. Two of these modules are core modules which all students must complete: Teaching & Learning in Medical Education and Principals of Assessment in Medical Education.
We also offer several specialist routes at certificate level. These include:
- Medical Education (Anaesthetics) PGCert
- Medical Education (for Surgery) PGCert
- Medical Education (General Practice) PGCert
- Medical Education (Oncology) PGCert
- Medical Education (Radiology) PGCert
- Medical Education (Simulation) PGCert

Postgraduate Diploma in Medical Education
The focus at diploma level is on the Teacher as Leader and is designed for students who wish to further explore key concepts in medical education and increase their educational experience.
Following completion of the Certificate, a further three 20-credit modules are undertaken at diploma level. Students are required to undertake either Curriculum Planning in Medical Education or Leadership in Healthcare & Healthcare Education as a core 20-credit module and can then take two further optional 20-credit modules.
Students who wish to progress to Masters must take the Medical Education Research module as one of their optional courses.

Postgraduate Masters in Medical Education
The focus at masters level is on the Teacher as a Researcher and is designed for students who wish to develop expertise in Medical Education Research.
Following successful completion of the Diploma, students undertake one 60-credit dissertation module, which involves the completion of an in-depth study of one aspect or topic of medical education.
