Reader in Mathematics

Profile

Raluca Eftimie obtained a PhD in Applied Mathematics in 2008 from the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada.

She then moved to McMaster University, Hamilton, Canada, for a Postdoctoral position.

In 2011, she took up a permanent position at the University of Dundee. She became Senior Lecturer in Mathematics in October 2014.

Raluca was then appointed to the post of Reader in October 2017.

Research

Her research covers two seemingly complementary research areas:

  • Self-organized biological aggregations
  • Cancer therapies with a focus on immunotherapies and viral therapies

In regard to self-organized biological aggregations, she is particularly interested in pattern formation and how communication/signalling mechanisms among individuals/cells influence the formation and movement of various types of aggregations.

She is also interested in the analytical techniques that could be used to investigate and classify the multitude of spatial and spatio-temporal group patterns displayed by nonlocal PDE models. These are patterns that are associated with the use of various communication/signalling mechanisms.

In regard to cancer therapies, she is interested in modelling the cellular-level, and molecular-level, interactions between cancer cells and immune cells. These are interactions mediated by various communication molecules such as cytokines and chemokines.

She is also interested in investigating analytically and numerically the local and global dynamics of these systems of PDEs and ODEs.
