About

The main part is of designing cutlery for groups with disabilities and a communication box for people to combat loneliness.

User and Contextual Research

Basic information

ROBOT TOM

55 years old

An elderly Ehler-Danlos Syndrome patients

Backstory

His faulty gene has been inherited from his parents, and his family is confused by chronic illness.

Scenario

They need to take more time and use more power than others during almost every meal because their joints will feel uncomfortable when they use cutleries and last a long time.

Emotions

Depression, angry, sadness, helpless. And they are also eager to change the current situation.

Motivations

One of the solutions is to deal with the problem is to design cutlery to help them develop a new habit of using it.

Behaviours

Depression, angry, sadness, helpless. And they are also eager to change the current situation.

Capability inhibitors

Joint hypermobility; loose, unstable joints that dislocate easily; joint pain and clicking joints; extreme tiredness; dizziness and an increased heart rate after standing up.

Inspirations

Problem

  1. I design it from the point of theory, but is it suitable for arthritis?
  2. When I make it into a real object, will it be popular in the market?

Opportunity

The series of cutleries for people with arthritis is not only suitable for them, but also can be used by other people; it will replace the traditional cutleries gradually.

Effect

  1. It can provide help to arthritis, they will improve the situation of joints pain
  2. It will improve their feeling of happiness and increase their life quality

Process

Sketches

Through the preliminary sketches, I made up the simple model with clay, because the users can feel the structure and size are suitable for them or not. And I also think if there are any more changes need to do.

Simple model

Then I can measure the precise sizes, and made up it in the Rhino, so I can see it more clear and intuitive.

Rhino model

Process

  • research background information
  • conduct an interview with volunteers
  • draw the sketches and make sure of the plan
  • make the simple model and build in Rhino
  • 3D printing it through the Rhino model
  • combine with two parts of it

Final product

It can be suitable for almost every person because the flexibility of elastic is good.
