An archaeological facial reconstruction that has been done entirely in digital 3D software.

About

I have recreated the soft tissue of a face, belonging to an individual who likely lived in Scotland 300 years ago. The software I used was Geo-Magic Freeform, for the build of scientific measured facial features and skin depth. Zbrush, for texturing the face's age and colouring. Keyshot to render the animation of the processes and to the final piece. And lastly, Adobe After Effects, to finalise the presentation.

The individual stages taken in this cranio-facial reconstruction

The skull as it is before any reconstruction. Much of the surface is damaged, the nose area between the eyes and much of the upper front teeth are missing.

The skull before reconstruction.

Reconstruction Stage 2

The skull as described before but now with measuring pegs applied to their specifically proposed areas of depth measurement.

The skull with applied depth pegs.

Reconstruction Stage 3

The skull as described before. Now with the muscles of mastication and facial expressions applied in their specific origins and insertion points. The only muscles missing are those from around the eyes.

Reconstruction Stage 4

The skull as described before. Now with an application of bone that fills in the missing areas for assistance in measurement. the muscles of the eyes and eyeballs have now also been added to the surface.

The skull with added hard tissue and eyeballs.

Reconstruction Stage 5

The skull as described before. Now with the facial features applied. this includes the eyebrows, the nose, the mouth, the ears and finally a neck. all in their specific places.

The skull with facial features applied.

Reconstruction Stage 6

The skull with all of its facial features in their place. the overall surrounding tissue is now roughly in place, giving the model the appearance as though the Facial features are not attached to the surrounding skin.

The skull with the overall rough soft tissue applied.

Reconstruction Stage 7

This model is of a fully built head, all of the facial features and skin are now exactly where they're supposed to be. this model however is without any texture, hair or colour to give further visual description.

The skull with finalized untextured soft tissue.

Reconstruction Stage 8

This model is not fully textured, the skin has now been fully aged to appear to be of the woman's natural tone, with wrinkles and pores applied. Hair has also been included.

The head now fully textured.

Reconstruction Stage 9

The model as described before now fully coloured. she is appears as a Caucasian woman with brown/blond hair that appears to be greying slightly. the Model is now finalized.

The head now fully coloured.

Reconstruction Stage 10

The model has had a bust added to it in order to give a richer visiual detail into how she likely looked during her lifetime. The bust includes her left arm exposed, holding her green tartan clothing around her shoulders. She has a blouse exposed and her arm has a greying white sleeve up the her wrist.

The head now fully complete with a bust added to create a more fulfilled reconstruction. This is a likely visual idea of how the woman looked during her lifetime.
