Alexandra McConnell

Art, Science & Visual Thinking MFA

Soft sculpture, crochet and textile visual artist with a love of parasites.

About

Alex McConnell is a soft sculpture textile artist who creates plush cells and crafts inspired by parasitic form. Her work aims to take the deadly parasites out of the lab and into a domestic setting, where ordinary people are being affected.

She has translated the parasites into ordinary objects such as ‘The Malaria Mobile’ and the ‘Trypanosome Hammock’.

‘The Malaria Mobile’ was made during her residency at the Wellcome Centre for Integrative Parasitology in Glasgow. As artist in residence, she collaborated with scientist Dr Scott Millar on this project and the accompanying pattern book.

Through her use of medium, Alex challenges the common discourse around scientific communities, and she aims to inspire fellow creatives to find common ground amongst traditionally opposing peer groups.
