Boxes to Grow With are self-guided toolkits that allow schools to personalise their implementation of learning for sustainability by creating an outdoor space.

About

Teachers want to incorporate sustainability, but the current curriculum is insufficient. Simultaneously, pupils want to take actions to become more sustainable. This lack of guidance and awareness at government level provides the opportunity for a resource that allows schools to say “enough is enough” and take action themselves.

Education Scotland suggest that by 2030 we should live in “happy, healthy and sustainable communities with schools playing a ... role in this transformation”. This prompted me to think about how changes made at schools could benefit wider communities. I completed a workshop with a secondary school to get an understanding of pupils and teachers understanding of sustainability themes. I spoke to various stakeholders linked to sustainability and education to get their input throughout the project.

Boxes to Grow With are three toolkits that support schools to create an outdoor space. Self-guided activities and reflections are included throughout so users can make links to LfS themes. Schools can tailor the themes to their context creating a “bottom up” and pupil led implementation.
