30 years ago this month (November 1988), the Main Library opened its doors to UoD staff and students for the first time. The previous Library had been housed in the Tower Building but, with staff and student numbers and library stock growing every year, a larger library was needed.
The original building, designed to be simple and low-key, was a rectangular 3-storey building with a reinforced concrete structure on the site of a former car-park adjoining the University Chaplaincy. The foundation stone was laid by Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother in 1986.
Designed with an emphasis on flexibility rather than fixed function, the building could easily be adapted without alterations to services or structure. To permit future growth, extendibility was also a factor in the design and the Main Library has indeed been extended twice, once in 1997 and then again in 2007, to accommodate student needs.
