Honorary Graduates' Award for Inclusive Practice winners

This year’s Honorary Graduates’ Award for Inclusive Practice has been awarded to the Careers Service and a team from the Library and Learning Centre. The joint winners share a £1000 practice development fund and have been invited to attend the Graduation Dinner at the V & A Dundee. The Library and Learning Centre team were honoured for creating a new Leisure Reading Collection in the Broughty Ferry Beach Club area of the Main Library with the aim of supporting student integration, attainment, well-being, and stress reduction.

The Leisure Reading collection was noted as one of a number of submissions of engaging and thoughtful practice which demonstrate support for the enhancement of the learning experience for students. The creation of the Leisure Reading Collection was viewed by the judging panel as ‘as positive approach’ to the promotion of recreational reading to support integration and the development of language skills. It was seen to be ‘new and different’ and to provide ‘inclusivity for a wide range of students’. The judges also felt that there is real potential here to impact positively on socialisation and wellbeing.

“I am delighted that this project has been recognised,” said Hannah Whaley, Assistant Director of the Library and Learning Centre. “Reading beyond academic texts has been shown to have positive benefits for academic achievement, well-being and personal development. The project team were all committed to creating something of value to our students.”

The positive reaction from students to the collection means it is now being expanded into additional spaces being created across all University of Dundee library sites for the new academic year. The collections will also be updated and refreshed with new stock each year, and students are able to email in suggestions and requests.

The leisure reading collection launched in January 2019 with 427 titles across the following genres:

Fiction:-  Bestsellers, Crime, Fantasy, Graphic Novels, Fiction in translation, Historical Novels, Mystery, & Science Fiction

Non-Fiction:-  Biographies, Cookery, Health (incl Mindfulness & Yoga), History, Music, Sport & Travel
