Dundee Law School has a flourishing and supportive research environment designed to promote excellence among staff and research students. The School is committed to providing a high quality and relevant postgraduate research programme which combines individual supervision with the opportunity to be part of a flourishing research culture.

Candidates are supported in their work through regular meetings with their supervisors who work at the cutting edge of legal research. The primary supervisor will be an expert in the candidate’s area of research and will meet with the candidate regularly for critical discussion and guidance. The second supervisor provides assistance and guidance as appropriate on the production of a thesis.  Candidates are also given access to research training in a variety of forms. The University provides an excellent portfolio of courses to all postgraduate students which provide an opportunity to both develop skills and become a part of a wider postgraduate community. This skills training is complemented by the fortnightly PhD seminars (at which students present their work in front of an audience of fellow students and staff) and training events designed specifically for postgraduate research students in the School of Law. These events include an annual residential retreat to The Burn House, Glenesk each autumn at which students have a chance to gain further training in research and to socialise with their peers, who are drawn from across the globe. In recent years research students have come from the following countries: Croatia, Egypt, France, Greece, Nigeria, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and the Yemen.

All postgraduate research students are also invited to play a full role in all the research activities of the School and to participate in research seminars and discussion groups.

The School of Law provides a study room for PhD students equipped with desktop computers, access to major electronic databases and a wide range of online research tools and resources. Students also enjoy access to our excellent library and law librarians.
