PhD Title:
Environmental degradation, Human rights and the future of sustainable development in the Niger Delta of Nigeria

The Niger Delta region of Nigeria is the third largest wetland in the world and it is richly endowed with numerous natural resources and extensive biodiversity. However, due to inadequate constitutional safeguards and in spite of the plethora of environmental protection laws and enforcement agencies, the Niger Delta is undergoing systematic degradation which might lead to an eventual environmental extinction of the region.

My research examines the effectiveness of the constitutional safeguards, if any, and other relevant environmental legislations in Nigeria, with a view to proposing more realistic constitutional safeguards to balance the ecosystem in such a way as to guarantee the right to life of the indigenous people of the Niger Delta, and also to ensure a continuation of natural life and the ultimate preservation of the Niger Delta for the benefit of future generations.
