Do you want to learn a foreign language, from home, at your own pace, when and where you like?

You can start from a basic knowledge of a language, (or even none if you are a competent linguist), and we will take you up to Higher level in our Intensive courses, over 25 weeks (or less).

If you want to take it further, our Graduate Diplomas run for two years, and are ideal if you need a language qualification for your work purposes or for personal interest.

Teaching Methods

Our courses are delivered over the internet, using Blackboard, the University of Dundee “virtual learning environment”. You will be part of a virtual learning community, in regular contact with your lecturers and fellow students. Language speaking and listening are practised via online chats (such as Skype).

Intensive Courses

Our 25 week Intensive Courses are intended for those wishing to jump-start a language.

You would normally be expected to have some basic knowledge of the language you want to study,  but if you are a competent linguist and are willing to dedicate sufficient time (approximately 4 to 5 hours per week), then you could start from scratch.

These are flexible courses which you study from home, and will take you from the basics up to the equivalent of SQA Higher and beyond.

If you complete the course satisfactorily you will receive a Certificate of Course Completion and 20 SCOTCAT credits.

These courses are often taken by people wishing to take the Graduate Diploma who lack the necessary qualifications.

Revision Courses

If you already have some knowledge of a language (e.g. a rusty Higher) then our 10 week Revision Courses are for you.

We will help you rebuild your confidence and competence, and take you to a standard equivalent to SQA Higher.

If you complete the course satisfactorily you will receive a Certificate of Course Completion.

Graduate Diploma Courses

Our Graduate Diploma distance learning courses start in September every other year (2014, 2016 etc), and run for two years.

They aim to provide the challenge of an undergraduate curriculum in the relevant practical language, they carry a rating of 120 SCOTCAT points (SCQF Levels 9-10).   If you are a teacher, please note that the diploma courses are accredited by the General Teaching Council for Scotland.  For information regarding further professional registration please contact the GTCS www.gtcs.org.uk/professional-update.

As well as modules taught online, there are a number of immersion days held either in Dundee or online in each academic year.
