Our dynamic Languages team has years of experience in teaching languages to undergraduates, postgraduates, staff and members of the public. Teaching is student-centred and classes involve lively interaction. Our staff are regularly nominated for the University's Student-led Teaching Awards.
You can study French, German or Spanish as part of many degrees, and we also offer a wide variety of other language courses for professional development and personal interest.
Learning a language is not just about learning words and phrases. It is much more than that. It is about embracing different cultures, diverse lifestyles, and discovering more about the people and the world around you.
As well as learning a language, you will develop skills in oral and written presentation, debate, interpretation, translation and creative writing.
Students are elagible on application to become Associate Members of the Chartered Institute of Linguists (IOL), (free of charge, www.iol.org.uk), as the University is a prefereed HE partner of the IOL
We'll also provide opportunities to meet native speakers at social events, and chances to explore other cultures in a variety of ways, including Language cafe chat sessions and student led languages societies.
Language skills are rated very highly by employers. Various resources are available highlighting this - Language Launchpad features interviews with UK language graduates to find out how their language skills have benefitted their careers, while SCILT (Scotland's National Centre for Languages) provides job profiles careers information, and interviews with successful people in the business and sporting worlds on why they consider that learning a language is really important.
