How to install and use the VPN to get remote access to secure services on your Windows computer. You have to be off campus to run the VPN.

This is currently NOT a replacement for the School of Life Sciences VPN (Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client). Access to secure services within Life Sciences will be available after Life Sciences migrates to the new network.

How to install - do this once

If you're using a managed Staff Desktop (Windows 7), the SonicWall VPN has been installed for you and can be found in the Start menu. You only need to install it if your computer is non-managed/personal.

Non-managed/personal computers

  1. Go to the Dundee University VPN access portal
  2. Select Dundee University from the drop-down list and click Next
  3. Enter your University credentials (see below) and click Log in

  1. Click Install when you reach the Secure Endpoint Manager page
  2. Click Run in the pop-up bar and wait for the installation to complete
  3. When this has finished, double-click the Install Connect Tunnel link that appears
  4. Click Install to start the Connect Tunnel client installation
  5. Once finished, an icon called SonicWall VPN Connection should appear on your desktop

How to use once installed

  1. Open the SonicWall VPN Connection by selecting it from the Start menu (managed Staff Desktop (Windows 7)) or double-clicking the desktop icon (non-managed/personal computer)

The first time you use it you may be asked for some or all of the following information

Enter uod.vpn.dundee.ac.uk in the Server Details field
Make sure the Login Group field says Dundee University
Click Next then Finish on the next step

The VPN client will remember these details the next time you launch it

  1. If asked to set a location, pick Work network

Check and end your connection

Hover over the icon in the system tray (you may have to show hidden icons) to see if you're connected to the VPN. Click on the network icon in the system tray, then on the entry for SonicWall VPN Connection. Select Disconnect here when you want to end your connection with the VPN.

Stop the VPN automatically running when you log in

The SonicWall VPN starts to run by default when you log in to your computer. If you'd rather choose to turn it on yourself, you will need to configure msconfig.exe. To access msconfig.exe, use the keyboard shortcut Windows Key + R and the Run window will open. In the text box, type msconfig and press Enter or OK and the MsConfig window will open. From here, uncheck SonicWall VPN Connection.
