Nature and the City in George MacDonald's Fiction
Although George MacDonald (1824-1905) is known today for his fantasy fiction and children’s literature, my thesis explores his non-fantasy novels written for adults.
My research focuses upon MacDonald’s representation of social issues in his writings and how these intersect with his theology/spiritual beliefs; particularly, my research explores his illustrations of Victorian social reformatory schemes including the provision of housing for the working poor, the establishment of green spaces within the city, and the promotion of animal welfare.
