Film4 options Lynda Clark's novel 'Beyond Kidding'

Congratulations to School of Humanities staff member Lynda Clark, who's novel Beyond Kidding has been optioned by Film4. Fairlight Books recently announced that Film4 had acquired the tv and film rights to Lynda's novel for a feature film to be directed by Will Stefan Smith.

Published in the UK last year by Fairlight, the novel is a literary sci-fi yarn about a man who makes up a child in order to secure a job. When he receives a call from the police to say the boy has been found, he arrives at the police station to find a child waiting for him – one who looks exactly like the picture he photoshopped.

Lynda Clark is an award-winning short story writer and Beyond Kidding is her debut novel. Her short story, Ghillie’s Mum, about a shapeshifting mother, was recently shortlisted for the ALCS Tom-Gallon Trust Award, one of the Society of Authors’ Awards, and last year was shortlisted for the BBC National Short Story Award. Lynda is also a Research and Development Fellow in Narrative and Play with us here at the University of Dundee, as part of the InGame: Innovation for Games and Media Enterprise project.

Fairlight will be publishing a collection of Lynda’s short stories, many of which contain sci-fi and fantastical elements, in Summer 2021. Emerging talent Will Stefan Smith has directed an episode of HBO’s Avenue 5 and a standalone short film BBW for Channel4’s series On the Edge. Most recently, Will directed a short for Film4, Two Single Beds, written by and starring Daniel Kaluuya.
