Module Details

This module examines the development of the settlement of the early American west, from the arrival of the first settlers in the Revolutionary Era to 1830 when the region ceased to be a frontier or backcountry region. Core topics to be examined include:

  • The nature of frontier society
  • The development of the backcountry economy
  • Settlement patterns in the backcountry
  • Frontier warfare
  • The image of the frontier
  • Relations with Native Americans
  • The development of government institutions

The teaching on this module consists of one three hour seminar per week over eleven weeks.  

Assessment

This module is assessed as follows:

  • One seminar presentation (20%)
  • One 3,500 word essay (30%)
  • One 2-hour examination (50%)
