Annual Research Review

The University’s Research and Knowledge Exchange Committee (RKEC) oversees the Annual Review of Research (ARR) across the University. This enables the University to determine the range and quality of the research being conducted, informs strategic planning and preparations for external assessment at both School and University level, and provides individual staff members with feedback that will help their development. The ARR covers research outputs and activity performed in the previous calendar year.

The outputs of the Annual Research Review (ARR) are fivefold: i) to provide annual feedback to individual staff members, ii) to provide data annually to Deans to inform OSaRs and allow detailed understanding of strengths and weaknesses in their individual School’s research portfolio, iii) to provide summary data to the Research & Knowledge Exchange Committee (RKEC) allowing a University-wide view of research quality and sustainability, iv) to pre- populate the Discovery REF module with putative scores of high quality research outputs, and v) to provide one means to identify research with either high impact or potential for high impact.

Reviews will be coordinated by Schools and will be based on information held within Discovery, the University’s Research Portal. This data includes research outputs, activities, grant funding and student supervisory responsibilities.

There are two steps to the process for individuals being reviewed in the ARR:

  1. Check the data on Discovery

A report is generated in Discovery that shows each individual's data for the review period. Log into Discovery,, then click on the “My profile” tab, and download the Faculty and Academic Activity report for the most recent period. This report is available in either PDF or Word format.

      2. Complete the ARR Template

The ARR Review template should be completed and returned to the School Research Administrative Lead.
