Research Degrees

Studying for a research degree in History offers the exciting prospect of working at the frontiers of knowledge under the supervision of an expert and in the company of equally enthusiastic and dedicated fellow researchers.

Most of our students are studying for a PhD (three/four years full time, or six part time), and a few are studying for an MPhil (3-5 years).

Our current postgraduate research topics range from the role of fashion and display in Scotland in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries to the American civil rights movement of the 1960s.

Take a look at the topics being studied by the current research students.

AHRC funding

AHRC (Arts & Humanities Research Council) funded doctoral studentship places are available in the School of Humanities.  This is a fantastic opportunity to have your PhD tuition fees paid (UK & EU students) plus receive a yearly maintenance grant (UK students only).  Applications are invited from new and current students (in first year of study if full-time or up to second year if part-time).

Full details available from the AHRC studentship webpage.
