We teach courses in all our areas of expertise, to undergraduates and postgraduates, both on campus and via distance learning.
In particular, we have well-established degree courses in Scottish and British History, plus European, American and Global History in the Post-Mediaeval period (1500-present).

We offer a range of History undergraduate degrees, allowing you to specialise in:
- Scottish Historical Studies
or you can combine one of the above with a Modern Language (French, German, Spanish)
or combine History with any of the following subjects:
- American Studies
- Business Economics with Marketing
- European Studies
- International Relations
- Modern Languages (choose two from French, German, Spanish)
Whichever route you choose, from the very start of your studies, you will be analysing various kinds of historical evidence, including written and oral material, maps, and visual images.
We also offer two modules in Scottish History as part of an Open University undergraduate degree.
We have a range of taught masters courses (MLitt or PGDiploma), where students study specialist reading modules in their particular area of interest as well as core modules in historical theory and skills.
You can study on campus MLitt courses in the general areas of:
- Scottish History
or more specialist courses in:
- Gender, Culture & Society
- Global Empires
- Greater Britain in the 20th Century
Some of these students go on to study for a PhD, a detailed study of a historical topic leading to thesis of 80-100,000 words.
We also offer distance learning courses in:
- Family & Local History (via the Centre for Archive and Information Studies)
- Scottish History
We offer a range of modules and courses in Scottish History by Distance Learning at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.
