History at the University of Dundee

We are an enthusiastic team of Historians interested in the social, economic, cultural and political history of the early and late modern periods. We have specialists in Scottish, British, Irish, American, European, African, Indian and global history.

We teach undergraduate & postgraduate courses in our areas of specialism, including degrees in:

  • History combined with a range of other subjects, including modern languages
  • Scottish History at undergraduate & postgraduate level, on campus & by distance learning

Our postgraduate research students are studying a wide range of topics from the culture of death in 20th century Scotland to British public opinion of Spain in the early 19th century.

Her 2012 book, Ain't Scared of Your Jail:  Arrest, Imprisonment, and the Civil Rights Movement, has been nominated for seven awards, including awards from the Organisation of American History, the American Historical Association and the prestigious Lillian Smith Book Award by the Southern Regional Council, which commemorates Smith's work against racial discrimination in the South during the 1950s and 1960s.
