Academic dress is a highlight of Graduation with graduation students wearing traditional academic robes.

You should hire your Academic robes from the official University robemaker, Ede & Ravenscroft.

Selecting the right robe

There are different designs and colours of robe for each degree, make sure you select the correct gown and hood from the website.

Your degree type is shown in eVision, for example BSc or MA. If you are not sure which robe to choose please contact Ede and Ravenscroft via their contact form

You must wear the correct gown and hood for your degree. Otherwise we will not allow you to cross the stage and you will be graduated in absence.

There will be spare gowns available on the day, but to ensure you have the correct gown size, it is best to place an order. If you are unable to come to the ceremony, you can contact Ede & Ravenscroft to arrange a refund.

Dress code

There is no strict dress code we just ask that students wear formal clothing (no jeans, t-shirts, flip flops). You can wear whatever colour you wish and National dress is permitted. As you have to walk up a staircase in front of 2,500 people make sure you wear appropriate shoes.

Should you not have a gown and hood, or are otherwise dressed inappropriately, you will not be permitted to cross the stage.

Collecting your robes

Your academic gown should be collected in advance of your ceremony from:

  • Marryat Hall within the Caird Hall

Access to the Marryat Hall is on the West side of City Square (to the right as you are facing the Caird Hall).

You will receive a voucher by email no later than three days before your ceremony which you will need to present, either printed or on your phone, when collecting these.

The dates and times when you can pick them up will be added here.

Please try and collect these the day before your ceremony where possible.

Should you need to collect them on the day of your ceremony, remember you will need to be at the Caird Hall to register and be seated no later than 30 mins before your ceremony begins.

Returning your robes

Gowns should be returned to the gown return area in the Bonar Hall on the day of your ceremony. You can also return your gown to the Marryat Hall immediately after your ceremony if you are not attending a photography session or the garden reception.
