My work at its core, showcases a fascination with the human form, and seeks to twist and distort it beyond recognition to disturb and unsettle the viewer

About

Profile photo of Thomas Stratton

The main basis for my body of work has always come down to a deep fascination with the human form. As a result, my works aim to take these organic forms and twist them into grotesque states of abstraction until their original appearances can no longer be determined. This approach to my practice is also heavily influenced by the body-horror aesthetics employed by directors such as John Carpenter and David Cronenburg. While these elements have always permeated my practice to some extent, it is only recently that I decided to make the jump from digital back into traditional mediums such as acrylic, as I feel it gives an added sense of physicality and weight not present in my prior works. I have however carried over some elements from my digital practice; including large blocks of flat, graphic colour to juxtapose against the visceral organic components of the composition.

Image 1 and 2 contain various gory and bloody elements, which are not depicted realistically, but may still be disturbing to some viewers. Image 3 does not include any gore but the imagery may still be considered frightening and disturbing by some viewers.

a figure with mottled reddish skin stands in the centre of the composition. Behind it, the background consists of various abstract forms and shapes, in a psychadelic palette of colours
