Fine Art BA (Hons)

Exploring the mundane aspects of life with expressive paintings.

About

sam gilbert profile

My practice focuses on capturing a mixture of different people as they interact with daily needs. Currently, my artwork emphasises the mundane feeling behind day-to-day life, concentrating on commuting and working. Using both photography and sketching on location to create compositions, my final work is mainly produced through oil paintings. I observe both tourists and locals in Scotland to create moments of stillness from busy periods. I am interested in creating works which explore unique perspectives as well as using planes of colour to direct the viewer. One of my main influences especially for colour is Joan Eardley, whilst looking at Alan McGowan for more figurative paintings. I don’t strive for realism but instead try to capture the emotion I feel in the moment, quite often finding a feeling of loneliness or isolation on the characters that appear in my paintings.
