Affordable post-disaster housing focused on PTSD alleviation

About

matthew-beresford-profile

My work focuses on examining the mental health of those within post-disaster housing and highlights the various alleviation techniques available. It then incorporates these elements into the high-density housing provided by the bunkhouse typology through an architectural language. Taking advantage of the missed opportunities to instead create a typology that is designed to alleviate mental health symptoms and reduce the chance that PTSD becomes a lifelong condition. The new typology will allow the occupants to feel once again safe and comfortable and provide a foundation for them to rebuild their lives.

The influence behind the design choices focuses on the study of proxemics and the literature of Kai Erikson, Hannah Arendt, and the imagery of Jan Rothuizen. With an emphasis on affordability and ease of construction.

Site wide axonometric

An axonometric view of a small community, consisting of 10 completed buildings and 1 in construction. The community is encompassed by trees and vegetation and shows bustling life, consisting of farming and shopping.

Perspective section

A cut through section of two buildings and the external space they share. The section is drawn in perspective showing people farming, walking and living. There are animals in the foreground with additional buildings and trees in the background.

Deconstructed axonometric

There is a building cut in half to show the inner mechanism of the make-up. This consists of 2 floors, a roof and associated walls. Constructed from wood and 4 concrete pillars at each of the buildings corners. The roof is dual pitched. Within the building there is only depicted 1 door, 1 window, 1 ladder and 1 hatch
