Narrating Cumbernauld / creating new forms of social encounter within the urban realm

About

martyna przybolewska

Cumbernauld New Town was initially envisioned as a balanced community where a concentration of facilities and activities was to be open and easily accessible to everyone. However, with time and different design decisions, the town began to take a step away from the original urban strategy. The needs of society and the quality of social life began to be slowly forgotten leading to the decision about the demolition of the Town Centre. The aim of this design research project is to revive public life in Cumbernauld and reconnect the town and its society through an exploration of architectural typologies that enrich social practices. The proposed narrative for the New Town focuses on the original form of the Town Centre, carefully embedding new components of social encounter within the field of columns.
