"In Transience" - expressing reflection and memory through experimental dye and knit processes.

Reflecting on my childhood, growing up in Orkney, memories of the rugged landscape and encompassing celestial sky are constants. How we recollect memories and the way our reflection can become distorted and hazy with the passage of time intrigues me. Within my work I have visually explored this idea of drifting and meandering thought, consciousness, and daydreaming, with emphasis on that of my own childhood and the landscapes and cultural influence in which I was surrounded. Inspiration has been taken from the work of prominent Orcadian artists Sylvia Wishart and Gunnie Moberg from their own depictions of memory in reflected imagery and the use of double exposure photography.

I have created fabric designed to give the wearer, and viewer, the freedom to disconnect from reality, providing a space to dream and reflect. The materials used in certain areas create fluidity and drape, with the purpose of inspiring free and intuitive movement and allowing an expression of hopes and dreams held by a younger self. This theme is further communicated through the pattern, texture, and composition of the designs, supported by experimental yarn dying processes that create a transient, ethereal, and indefinable colour story.
