My work seeks to explore the twists and turns from a young adult book series and translate it into metalwork.

About

Black and white portrait of Breege Fraser

I create organic, playful spoons based on characters from a fantasy young adult book series. This series was picked for the twists and turns it offers, calling to be translated into something new and playful. Inspired by the use of tarot and nature within the books, I utilised text along with a range of skills, such as casting, press forming, wirework and ceramics to create pieces that make the main characters a tangible experience.

On the left, a green-and-brown mottled copper word reading 'Bravery' supports three leaves; one shiny copper, a wire silver and another copper, with a brushed effect are riveted on. These cradle another three copper wire leaves, with the words 'release' 'stalling' and 'sacrifice' inside of them. The handle of this spoon is a bronze twig.

These spoons depict two characters who I've allocated the tarot cards "Strength" and "The Hanged Man" to. They form a friendship in the book, and while they need each other, their tarot card meanings equally balance each other. Made from sustainably patinated copper and bronze, these spoons are non-functional decorative pieces.

"The Hanged Man"

A bronze twig handle supports a spoon bowl made of three copper wire leaves, with the words 'release' 'stalling' and 'sacrifice' within them in cursive. The word 'stalling' is backwards to represent the meaning of a the 'Hanged man' tarot card in reverse. The spoon rests on charred wood.

'The Hanged Man' is based off a character who throws the twists and turns from the beginning. The handle is made from a cast twig in bronze and the spoon bowl is made from copper.
