A sculptural installation exploring the links between the spirituality of space and the thresholds hidden within it.

About

Beth Duddy

I believe art isn’t just to be viewed; it should enable interactions that affects the viewer. I set out to evoke emotions and encourage the viewer to contemplate what I’ve created. I want the viewer to engage with me in a dialogue that provides them with a glimpse of me through my art and, by doing so, have a greater understanding of themselves.

I like to explore the different textures of objects, structures, and art that I see around me. While their designs represent a finished form, I like to look at how they can transcend their physical being into a new abstract form. Being heavily influences by the sacred Neolithic monuments across Scotland, I wanted to replicate the imposing nature of the Standing Stone Circles without losing the scale due to an indoor environment. Working with metal rods to create 3D drawings in space, I like the juxtaposition of the empty space versus the striking solid stones. I want to engage the viewer in abstract curiosity.

I resonate with the connections that the spiritual realms and forces through open doorways created by the contouring lines of the Standing Stones. The Standing Stones materialise to command attention and loom over the audience members just as they would in real life. The white plaster rocks starkly contrast with the metal stones. They are positioned within the circle and influenced by the stones placed at the burial cairns (specifically located at Kilmartin Glen).
