Exploring how sun-reactive pigments and alternative materials can create interactive pieces which aim to start a conversation around vitiligo and its beauty.

About

My work exposes the beauty in unusual skin conditions, more specifically vitiligo, and demonstrates how contemporary and interactive jewellery can be a powerful way to start conversations around differences and our right to feel beautiful and comfortable in our bodies. Vitiligo is something I have always had, along with a sense of alienation and isolation related to a lack of understanding around this condition. So, I wanted to learn about the condition from an artistic perspective and use my skills to create innovative and exciting designs.

During the development of my work, I connected with skin scientists and discovered hidden and exciting elements to the skin, including random patterns of cells and bright organic structures. I developed these inspiring elements into materials which can visually educate and expose the beauty. A key material that I experimented with is photochromic pigments, which change colour when exposed to sunlight. This pigment demonstrates vitiligo’s randomness, the different layers, patchy patterns, vulnerability and how the pigment slowly disappears. As the sun interacts with my pieces, dull colours are transformed into bright patches and swirls of pinks and purples which exaggerate the organic cells and patterns in the body.

This condition is so beautiful, but misunderstood, so I want to make people fall in love with it through colour, shapes, interactions and materials which all resemble its beauty and power.

Interactive Brooch Inspired by Vitiligo

This is an image of a lower torso of a female wearing a black bodysuit. The hands are in the forefront of the image and are holding a piece of jewellery that is to be worn as a brooch. This brooch has three flat layers to it and each layer is a unique shape which has wiggly and random edges with some holes in the middle. The top layer is purple aluminium with splotches of white pigment on the surface and small white balls of foam. The top layer has holes which the second layer shows through.

This image depicts an interactive brooch which has photochromic properties so when exposed to sunlight it colours change to a brighter purple and shows specs of blue. The shapes of this piece are inspired by the random and patchy shapes found on bodies with the skin condition vitiligo. Vitiligo is an auto immune skin disease that occurs when the bodies immune system destroys random melanocytes in the skin so the pigment is lost and patches appear. This condition can be seen on the legs and arms in this image, which help to highlight how this piece is illustrating the beauty of the condition.

Vulnerable Photochromic Earring

This is an image of an earring which is placed flat on a white background. This earring has two layers which are connected at the stud part of the earring. Both layers are flat and have a wiggly and random shape to them, with a few holes cut out in the centre. The top layer is purple aluminium with specs of darker purple on it, and three light purple foam balls. This layer has a few holes in it which allow the bottom layer to show through, the bottom layer also is bigger than the top layer so it overlaps

This is an interactive earring which has photochromic properties, so when exposed to sunlight or uv it changes from dull colours into the purples and pinks which are seen in this image. This piece is inspired by the skin condition vitiligo as the shapes, colours and interactions are based on research into this condition and the biology behind it. When someone has vitiligo their bodies immune system destroys random melanocytes in the skin so the pigment is left looking patchy and unprotected. This is an aspect which I wanted to visually explain through my work so people can be educated on the condition in an interactive and exciting way. As well as changing colour, this piece also pivots around a rivet, so once changed into the bolder purple colour the top layer can be moved and the protected layer underneath is revealed with no colour change. This is because the top layer has acted as a protective layer and blocked the uv from hitting parts of the layer beneath. This is what happens with vitiligo as when the skin has no melanin/pigment the white patches are left unprotected and vulnerable.

Vitiligo

This is an image of a female body from the shoulders down to the upper thighs, wearing a black bodysuit. The body has lighter patches of skin around the crotch area and top of the legs, as well as in the armpits and inner elbows. The body has vitiligo. On the upper left of the body suit is a brooch. This brooch is a light purple colour with wiggly and curved edges and a bottom layer peaking out the back. There are a few white dots of foam on the brooch.

This image depicts myself and my vitiligo. I am wearing my brooch that has been inspired by my own skin and the biology I have learnt behind it. This is a condition that I have had my whole life and have become really interested in learning the science behind it and the reason for the random patterns. Along this journey I have gained so much exciting imagery and learned so much, and from all of this I have created this piece, along with a few others. All of the shapes in this piece are based on line drawings that I created from looking at my own skin and naturally following the curves and wiggles. I am really proud to say that this is my body, my vitiligo and my jewellery because through this project I have learnt to love my differences and my white patches which make me powerful and unique.

My pieces are available to buy and I will be accepting commissions. I am currently in more of a development and experimentation stage with my work, so I am open to work with my materials to create something different and collaborate ideas. My work is focused a lot on the skin condition vitiligo and mixing science with jewellery so I am also open to the idea of connecting with people in this field.
