About

Profile photo of Zhaneta Zhekova

During my 4 years of studies at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design, I completed work that allowed me to explore my creativity, develop skills and gain experiences in multiple areas of design. From page layouts, colour theory, and software knowledge to the nuances of typography, the work shown is reflective of my journey as a graphic designer. The significance of typography within my practice has led me to a focus on editorial design. It can be seen in my ISTD submission where I explore the notion of dreams and the human unconscious. The publication allowed me to not only experiment with type but also with colour, paper stock and bookbinding method.

Driven by my editorial passion, I was also Co-Creative Director for the University of Dundee’s official student magazine – the Magdalen. My work consisted not only of designing and illustrating articles and magazine appearance but also steering and organising other creatives. This position was also extremely important from a collaborative aspect as I was communicating with writers, photographers, editors and other designers. The magazine was awarded the Highly Commended Award for Best Magazine Design by the Student Publication Association for 2022.

WINDOWS TO THE UNCONSCIOUS – Submitted to ISTD

A publication that explores the significance and impact of 'The Interpretation of Dreams' (1900) by Sigmund Freud. By publishing his book, Freud marked the beginning of the public's awareness of the unconscious mind.

A book with a clear acrylic cover and a title 'Windows to the Unconscious' engraved on it. Behind the book is a hand-written letter and a nib pen. The background is black.

The Magdalen Magazine

The Magdalen is the University of Dundee's student magazine. Through my work as a Co-Creative Director, the magazine was re-designed. This work resulted in the magazine being awarded the Highly Commended Award for Best Magazine Design by the Student Publication Association.

Spirit of the Garden - Anniversary Gin

The Spirit of the Garden is a gin commemorating the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the UOD Botanic Gardens. Inspired by the correlation between a leaf vein pattern and city street grids, the design of this bottle celebrates nature, the garden’s location and the environment.
