An immersive journey using digital photography, artificial intelligence, film and sound design to discover colours of the soul

About

Sasha Gartside Knudsen

Vipassana’ explores the artist’s esoteric journey after a 10-day silent meditation experience in the summer of 2019. The name of the project is the technique that was taught on the retreat, which is an ancient Buddhist method of meditation. The connectivity with the universe which the artist experienced has since led her to examine the psyche and the colourful epiphanies that she experienced, illustrating this feeling of a stream of light, energy and connectivity entering her body and life. This body of work aims to honour a very personal and special memory; the retreat was a total immersion and surrender to a source that is beyond our reality. In this project, the models are bathed in vivid, colourful and saturated light in the form of studio lights, coloured gels, long exposure light art photography and flash photography. Post shoot, the images go through an extensive editing session in Photoshop, to preserve and intensify the colours, textures and abstract shapes. Through the use of projections, artificial intelligence, fabric and props, specialised lighting and open space, the viewer becomes part of the work too- an angular human figure revealed moving, exploring and becoming colour saturated and ethereal dreamscapes.

A close up shot of a head takes up most of the frame. The face is looking past the viewer to the left and is doused in a rich blue hue. Gold, pink and blue shards of abstract long exposure light cut down the image in all directions. One of the long exposure light movements look like it’s coming out of the model’s eye
A silhouette of a figure is turned to the side in the centre of the image. They are within a circle of bold and vibrant long exposure light which is surrounded by an orange gradient on the right and a pink gradient on the left.
A model bathed in a red glow is looking to the left of the camera. Up against their head is a mirror that reveals a reflection of the model from another angle. Beyond the intensely red face and neck, the shoulders are a multitude of colours and the background has shapes of dark blue, green and turquoise
The artist’s 2m x 100cm x 85cm box structure in her space. A landscape projection covers the structure in vibrant colour and abstract movement. Taken from eye level, the structure can be seen within the space and in one of the corners.
A model bends over backwards in a sand dune landscape. A vibrant pink grass hill takes up half of the image and tall trees stretch up high behind her. A neon-y green sky lights up the landscape
A model bends over backwards over a cliff edge of some sand dunes. The model is bathed in a glowy red hue and her arms stretch up by her ears and towards the viewer. A teal sky can be seen in the background with silhouettes
Untitled
A model bends over backwards and is doused in a pink glow. The picture is taken in the corner of a white room and the model is posing in front of some suspended pieces of metallic paper. The room is covered in mostly pink, but also green, orange and pink abstract movements
A model stands on a beach in front of Broughty Ferry Castle to her right. Both of her feet are firmly stood in the ground and her hands are raised above her head and her palms are touching. She is covered in green light, and the background and sky is a deep purple
A model stands on a beach and is bent over with her hands firmly grasping a large piece of driftwood. We can’t see her face, only her hair falling to the ground, her back, arms and legs. The image was taken with a red coloured flash, which covers the model and the surrounding sand.
An artificial intelligence programme has created this image of one of the long exposure light art photographs of a model. The model is barely recognizable, as only a silhouette of them can be seen among the pixelated surrounding colours
: A silhouette of a model stands within big movements of long exposure light art. There are many neon orange and very vibrant pinks, blues and yellows surrounding them
