Umran Sarwar is the Director of Legal and heads the University of Dundee Legal team. Umran is responsible for shaping, implementing and driving the global legal vision and strategy on behalf of the University.
Umran’s team deliver practical, commercially-focused and cost-effective solutions, which enable the business of the University whilst supporting and protecting its interests and assets using a mix of in-house and external resources.
Umran is a qualified solicitor and a member of the Law Society of Scotland.
Umran graduated from the University of Dundee’s LLB programme in 2001 and began his career at Dundas and Wilson (now CMS); working on significant commercial cross border deals with the big four commercial banks and accountancy firms.
Following a 12 month secondment to RBS in 2008, Umran joined Martin Currie, a Global Asset Manager, as their Deputy Head of Legal. During his time with Martin Currie, Umran worked on significant strategic international transactions; gaining first-hand experience in working with other legal jurisdictions, including interactions with global regulators in Australia, Bermuda, the Cayman Islands, China, Hong Kong, Kuwait, Luxembourg, Singapore, the United Kingdom and the United States. Umran also sat on Martin Currie’s Unlisted Investment Committee for China, and was responsible for overseeing deal opportunities, commercial rationale and returns, alongside legal risks to the company’s private equity investment portfolio in China.
