Janice Aitken

Janice Aitken is an artist and Senior Lecturer at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design. She is Associate Dean for Quality and Academic Standards and teaches in Contemporary Art Practice as well as the Masters in Medical Art and Forensic Art. She is an alumna of the University of Dundee, having studied here both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

As well as regularly exhibiting paintings and photography, Janice is part of the CAHID team who carry out archaeological facial reconstructions and her work includes the texturing of images of Richard iii, Mary Queen of Scots and JS Bach amongst others.

She regularly works on collaborative projects with scientists. Such projects include the art direction of a publication and website as part of a project designed to highlight career pathways in science entitled ‘Stories in Science - Postdoctoral Pathways’ in collaboration with Dr Emma Compton and Dr Nicola Phillips. http://www.postdoc-pathways.lifesci.dundee.ac.uk/

In 2013, Janice won the competition to design glass panels for the façade of the new Medical Education Building at Ninewells with designs based on the eukaryotic cell, inspired by a project in collaboration with Dr Mhairi Towler.

Janice is particularly interested in equality issues in education and governance and is a director of Dundee Women’s Aid. She is currently Honorary Secretary of University and College Union Scotland.
