Baxter Lecture Theatre, University of Dundee Tower Building From 6:15 on 25 January 2018 (preceded by a wine reception in the Humanities Foyer from 5:15) Join us for this unique, free cultural event, jointly hosted by the School of Humanities Centres for Critical and Creative Cultures (4C) and for Scottish Culture. The programme includes: • A reading by Eddie Small, including the Great McGonagall’s verses of praise to Scotland’s national bard. • A talk by Dr David Robb introducing Burns’s gloriously bawdy, supernatural mock epic and ode to John Barleycorn, ‘Tam o’ Shanter’. • Screenings of two rare animated film adaptations, Tam o’ Shanter (drawn and devised by Edward and Elizabeth Odling, poem read by Harold Wightman, made for BBC TV 1958) and Tam o’ Shanter Rides Again (dir. Tom Steel, 1978), both from Scotland’s National Moving Image Archive; • Screening of a rare documentary from Scotland’s National Moving Image Archive, Homes and Haunts of Scotland's Ploughman Poet Robert Burns (Dir. J. French Gegg, 1933), with live music by silent screen accompanist and composer, Steven Gellatly. All welcome!
