Join Dr Nicholas Hopkins and his talk on 'Crucibles of Identity: The Social Psychology of Collective Events' at the University.
Nick will discuss a programme of research conducted at one of the largest mass gatherings in the world – the Magh Mela at Allahabad, north India.
More specifically, he will discuss interview and ethnographic research concerning participants’ encounters with other pilgrims and how the experience of these encounters impacted the degree to which they felt able to enact their Hindu identity.
Nick will also talk about how such experiences of identity enactment impacted participants’ social identifications after the event was over.
