Sustainable Travel

Green Travel Plan 2009-2014

The Green Travel plan has been reviewed and updated following our travel survey last year. A new 5-year travel plan has just been developed.

Current initiatives

We are major stakeholders in the Dundee Travel Active initiative:

Through this we will be offering hire bikes to students/staff, start date still TBC. A bike hub will be constructed in Dundee City centre, providing secure bike parking, showers and lockers for cyclists. We also have requested a pedestrian crossing on Hawkhill, which last month was installed. Cycle routes in Dundee have been improved and a new cycle map was produced. We were provided with 3,000 of these maps to hand out to staff and all new students during Freshers’ week. We are also in talks with bus companies about possible initiatives to encourage more students to use buses in Dundee.

We are also looking at possible discounts on buses for staff, a new government salary sacrifice scheme is now available to purchase annual bus tickets at a 30-40% discount.

Bike Pool

We have a bike pool available to all staff. There are currently 4 bikes available for staff to borrow. These bikes will also be used to provide cycle training. A bike pool also operates at Ninewells.

Cycle Training

Recently a member of staff (leader of our Bike Users Group BUG) trained to become a cycle trainer and from September will be offering cycle training to staff and students.

Bike Parking

Last year we installed 5 new bike racks providing parking for 50 bikes, 1 new covered shelter and 1 new secure shelter (Total 70 bike parking spaces). The above is in addition to the current bike parking provided > 118 spaces, which is a mixture of bike lockers- 22, secure covered parking > 70 and bike racks. All of the above is available and free for any member of staff, student or visitor to use. Within the courtyards of our Halls of Residences (Belmont, Heathfield, Seabraes & Tay Mills) there are covered, secure bike shelters offering several hundred parking spaces exclusively to students staying within Halls. All of the above applies to the main campus.

On Kirkcaldy campus, we installed a new bike rack (10 spaces) for general bike parking.

This year we will be installing more bike lockers and another secure covered area for bikes, exact locations and numbers still to be decided.

Bus Travel

Prices of all tickets and special offers for Travel Dundee and Strathtay Bus companies are available on our website.

Cycle & walking maps

This year we distributed to every new student a Dundee cycle and walking map (more than 3,000). These maps are available at all main receptions on campus.

To request copies please contact EB-Energy&Environment@dundee.ac.uk

Showers

Cyclists can use showers free of charge at our swimming pool (DUSA), in Mathew Building and at our sports centre (ISE before 8.30 am).

Liftshare

We subscribe to Dundee Lift Share and have our own dedicated area restricted for use by students and staff from the University only. We are currently discussing the provision of dedicated liftshare parking spaces.

Cycle to Work Scheme

We have just launched the cycle to work scheme, which is a salary sacrifice scheme, enabling staff to purchase bikes with a 30-40% saving.

There is also advice on buying and choosing a bike
