Originally from Dublin, Claire Halpin is Professor of Plant Biology and Biotechnology and Deputy Head of the Division of Plant Sciences at the James Hutton Institute.
She took a non-traditional path to where she is now, including initially having an interest in the biomedical world, completing a teaching qualification and studying for her PhD part-time whilst working as a research assistant. Claire worked in industry for Zeneca Seeds, Bracknell, before returning to academia to establish her own research group.
Claire moved to Dundee over seventeen years ago where she lives with her husband and two teenage daughters.
I hope that more and more women take a change at having a career in Science, so that more equality is present and also more of the wasted talented is brought to the area.
A career in Science is hard, full of stressful moments, but I always think that if one is ambitious and wants to be good at what they do, all professions are the same, at times really hard, because one puts pressure on oneself.
The importance thing is loving what you do.
