World record-breaking adventurer and University Rector Mark Beaumont BEM will give his insights into what makes a successful entrepreneur as part of University of Dundee’s Entrepreneurship Week 2018. Mark, who completed his remarkable around the world cycle in only 79 days last year, has built a successful business around his adventures. He will share stories from his epic challenges at a public lecture on Wednesday 21 February. Mark Beaumont has become a household name through his documentaries about ultra-endurance and adventure. Having smashed the circumnavigation cycling World Record twice in his career, he now holds this 18,000-mile title in a time of 78 days and 14 hours, averaging 240 miles a day. His epic documentaries have taken viewers to over 100 countries, into the Arctic, the high mountains and around the Commonwealth, also surviving capsize in the mid-Atlantic.

This workshop will take applications through the application form, picking out key aspects they need to address in each section. The session will highlight some of the key fundamental principles of successful commercialization, ranging from the distinction between 'features and benefits' to importance of intellectual property protection. It will include advice on how to communicate your technology clearly to non-specialists. The workshop will then discuss an effective structure of the presentation that short-listed candidates have to give, including advice on how to answer some FAQ’s. The session will be presented by Dr Tony Aldhous of KKI Associates Ltd, who as an organisation have a cumulative experience of 40 years in technology transfer, including some 250 individual spin-out projects across a range of technologies. Anne Fraser from RSE will also deliver an introduction to the programme and be on-hand to answer any questions.

Keynote speaker: Prof David Gibson OBE, Head of Entrepreneurship Education, Liverpool Johns Moores University LJMU won the Outstanding University Entrepreneurship Award trophy in the 2017 Times Higher Education Awards with the Entrepreneurship Educators Academe scheme. With a ‘train the trainers’ approach, this initiative sees staff already coached in entrepreneurship mentor junior colleagues to create curricula that are demonstrably linked to entrepreneurship. This interactive workshop will outline the methodology implemented at LJMU and consider any aspects that could be applied at the University of Dundee. This event is suitable for staff only.
