Tensions in Entrepreneurship Education: Defining ‘Entrepreneurship’

In this series, I will be examining some of the tensions that exist in the relatively new field of entrepreneurial education. In this instalment, I’ll be looking at how different definitions of ‘entrepreneurship’ affect methods of education.     While I was in my final year of my undergraduate degree, my college started a new program aimed at increasing entrepreneurship in the student body. As part of this venture, the college opened an ‘Idea Lab’ on the second floor of the library. The space featured paper, drawing supplies, a 3D printer, computers, Legos, sewing ma...

In Favour of the Side Hustle

Take my baking, for example. I made some cupcakes and brought them in on Halloween. Brian, upon taking a bite of one of the chocolate ones exclaimed, ‘Wow! These are so good! Have you thought about starting a business selling them?’ (I’ll admit, they were pretty delicious). SparkNotes for Entrepreneurs: 'Hooked: How to Form Habit-Forming Products' by Nir Eyal

Every day without fail, when I get on the bus to work, I open up Pinterest on my phone. I scroll past images of living rooms, crock pot dinners, and art projects. I may finally settle on a picture of creatively decorated cupcakes, which I pin to my “cake decorating’’ board. In Hooked: How to Build Habit-Forming Products,[1] Nir Eyal explains why so many of us are addicted to certain apps and digital services (of which my Pinterest usage is a prime example). He theorizes that habit-forming digital products utilize what he calls the ‘Hook Model,’ a process of habit-formation tha...
