Since 2007, English has had a Professor of Creative Writing, Kirsty Gunn, a critically acclaimed award-winning novelist who teaches at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Creative Writing is available as a joint honours degree (MA English and Creative Writing).  In addition, students taking a degree in English alone are able to select a number of Creative Writing modules as options. There are several undergraduate modules available to help establish creative writing and practice within the study of English Literature. At Level 2 we offer the module Introduction to Creative Writing Practicewhich will make you more aware of the quality of the work you produce, helping you improve and refine it and build up a portfolio of writing that you can be proud of.

At Level 3 we offer Writing as Making and Making Writing Matter, and at Level 4 Deciding on Writing which are designed, in practical workshops and seminars, to help you recognise and develop your own distinctive creative writing capabilities.

If you want to go on to study Creative Writing at postgraduate level, we also offer an MLitt/PGDip in Writing Practice and Study.
