Anthology One Launch & Exhibition
On Thursday 29th March at 6pm there will be a launch event for Anthology One – a new collection of stories from aspiring comic creators from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design (DJCAD). This will be accompanied by an exhibition of artwork from the anthology, which will also be the first exhibition held in the new dedicated comics gallery space in the Baxter Suite (Room 1.36, Level 1 in the Tower Building - see the campus map). In addition to artwork from the anthology a range of pieces from the University’s permanent collection of original comics artwork will be on display.
This first issue of Anthology One, edited by Phil Vaughan (DJCAD) and Dr Chris Murray (English), showcases the range of creative work from the Comic Art and Graphic Novels module undertaken by Animation, Graphic Design and Illustration students at DJCAD, as well as the winner’s of the first annual , which was awarded by the School of Humanities. The 72-page, full colour comic is published by 'UniVerse', a new imprint specially created to provide exposure for the students' work.
Dr Chris Murray said “we are delighted to open the comics exhibition space with artwork from our new publication, Anthology One. These developments show the commitment the University has to Comics Studies, a relatively new field in which Dundee has become a leader. We hope that the second issue will feature work from students currently creating comics as part of their MLitt programme, and future issues will contain work from next year's cohort of DJCAD and Humanities students working on comics modules.”
Phil Vaughan added “the Anthology series will provided an opportunity for students to see their work through to publication, and we are excited to see work produced on the course given exposure in the exhibition and the comic.”
Strong local traditions and expertise mean Dundee can lay claim to being the spiritual home of the British comics industry, and the University of Dundee helps to maintain this status. The pioneering MLitt in Comic Studies programme, launched last September, is the first postgraduate degree of its kind in the UK, and has attracted local, national and international graduates determined to gain an understanding of the comics medium and industry, and their relation to different genres, cultures, and media. An undergraduate module focusing on contemporary British comic writers and graphic novelists is also taught by Dr Chris Murray.
Join the editors and some of the artists in celebrating the launch of this new series, and the inauguration of the exhibition space. This exhibition is organised by the Scottish Centre for Comics Studies, in collaboration with Museums Services.
Anthology One will be on sale, and free wine will be provided. All welcome - please email firstname.lastname@example.org to book.
Anthology One is also available to purchase from ukondisplay.com.
